Marble

Material: Metamorphic carbonate stoneOrigin: Italy, Greece, Turkey, Oman, Indonesia

The most expressive of the natural stones. Marble is metamorphosed limestone, and its veining is a record of the pressure and mineral flow that formed it — which is why no two slabs repeat and why bookmatching works at all. Soft enough to carve and polish to a deep lustre, and reactive to acid, meaning lemon, vinegar and many cleaning products will etch it. That behaviour is not a defect; it is the trade-off for a material nothing else imitates convincingly. Best used on feature walls, living-area floors, powder rooms, tables and any surface valued more for character than for chemical resistance.

Granite

Material: Igneous crystalline stoneOrigin: India, China, Malaysia

The workhorse. Granite is igneous rock — crystallised from magma — which makes it hard, dense and very low in porosity. It resists acid, shrugs off UV, holds its colour outdoors and takes heavy traffic without complaint. Its figure is granular and speckled rather than veined, so it reads as texture rather than drama. This is the correct material for car porches, driveways, external walls, entrance floors, water features and any commercial floor that sees grit walked in from outside.

Sintered Stone

Material: Mineral particles fused under heat and pressureOrigin: Italy, Spain

Natural minerals compacted and fired at very high temperature until they fuse into a single dense sheet. The result is non-porous, heat resistant, UV stable and effectively immune to staining and acid etching — you can set a hot pan on it and cut a lemon on it without consequence. It comes in large formats, so an open-plan floor or a full-height wall can be covered with very few joints, and in thin sheets suitable for cladding. The practical choice for working kitchens, shower walls, dining tables and anyone who would rather not think about their surfaces at all.

Quartz

Material: Ground quartz bound in resinOrigin: Malaysia, China, Spain

Ground natural quartz bound with resin and pigment into a consistent, non-porous slab. Because the pattern is manufactured rather than quarried, quartz gives you predictability — what you approve on the sample is what arrives, with no batch surprises across a large kitchen. Non-porous and stain resistant, and it needs no sealing. Its one limit is sustained direct heat, which can mark the resin, so trivets matter. The sensible middle ground for bathroom vanities and kitchen worktops where consistency is worth more than unique veining.
